Legend of the Mid-Autumn Festival
A very long time ago, there were ten suns in the sky. The earth was plagued by a terrible and unceasing drought, and few plants and beasts could survive in the unforgiving climate.
Taking pity on the mortal races, the King of Heaven sent an archer hero named Hou Yi down to the earth to help. When Hou Yi arrived, he took out his crimson bow and shot down nine suns, leaving just one. The weather immediately turned mild and life became as we know it.
Deciding to reside on earth as a mortal, Hou Yi met a beautiful girl named Chang'er. This meeting kindled the spark of love and the two were soon joyfully wedded.
The contentment could not last, however. Accutely aware of how limited a mortal's lifespan was, Hou Yi decided to seek an elixir of immortality. He went to the Kunlun Mountains where the great goddess known as Western Queen Mother lived.
In acknowledgment for his previous heroism and contributions, the Western Queen Mother rewarded Hou Yi with the elixir, made from fruit from the Tree of Eternity. At the same time, she told Hou Yi that if the elixir was shared, he and his wife would both enjoy eternal life together on earth. However, the full dose, when consumed by an individual, would cause one to ascend to Heaven as a deity.
Hou Yi returned home and told his wife all that had happened and they decided to drink the elixir together on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month when the moon was full and bright.
Hou Yi's rival, a wicked man named Feng Meng, overheard their plan. One dark night, Feng Meng ambushed the unsuspecting hero and murdered him. Then racing to Hou Yi's home, the evil murderer attempted to rob Chang'er of the elixir. Furious at the death of her beloved, Chang'er picked up the elixir and drank it to the last drop.
Overcome with grief, but unable to stop her ascent to the Heavens, Chang'er made the moon her abode in order to be closest to the resting place of her beloved Hou Yi. To this day, her heart remains ever in the realm of mortals and with lovers everywhere.
Thus, the full moon has become a symbol of eternal love. Couples swear their mutual love under it, while separated lovers pray to it for a reunion.
